Three times a year — January, May and September — the Grand Sumo Tournament comes to Tokyo for fifteen days, and for those fifteen days this becomes the best sports day in Japan.

Your day starts before the city wakes, inside a sumo stable watching morning practice: the drills, the collisions, the hierarchy visible in who sweeps the ring. Your guide explains what you are watching and why it matters for the afternoon. Then, after lunch, you take your seats at Ryogoku Kokugikan — traditional masu box seats on the floor, the ones that sell out months ahead — and watch the day's bouts build to the top division with someone beside you who can read every ritual.
