Gion Matsuri is a thousand years old and takes over Kyoto for the whole of July, peaking on the yoiyama evenings when the great floats stand lit in the streets and the machiya houses open their fronts to display heirlooms they show only this week.祇園祭は千年の歴史を持ち、7月の京都をまるごと呑み込みます。頂点は宵山の夜——山鉾が灯りをまとって通りに立ち、町家がこの一週間だけ、家宝の屏風を格子の奥に飾って表を開ける夜です。祇园祭已有千年历史，整个7月席卷京都，而高潮是宵山之夜——巨大的山鉾亮灯立于街头，町家敞开门面，展示一年只此一周示人的传家宝。

The festival is glorious and overwhelming; the difference between a good night and a lost one is knowing where to stand and when.
